Boise State University Wind Band Camp

Last week (June 16–20, 2025), I had the honor of serving as the 9–12 band clinician for the Boise State University Wind Band Camp. Many thanks to good friends, Myron Peterson (BSU Director of Bands) and Mary Crandall (7–8 clinician and “educator extraordinaire”) for having me out!

The students had band twice a day for an hour. They also had studio hours, private lessons, music theory, and time for smaller ensembles. It was a busy week!

One of the afternoons we managed to hike in the foothills at Camel’s Back Park.

Mother Earth Brewing and Payette Brewing Company were probably my favorites on the trip, but Boise Brewing Company was a great stop after a hot hike. Thanks for the picture, Myron!

The Boise River, taken from the Capitol Boulevard Memorial Bridge (I walked this bridge multiple times a day!). Floating season opened the last day of camp, though it looked a bit dicey!

Some of my favorite iced coffee on the trip came from Dawson Taylor!

Slow by Slow Coffee was another solid option!

No trip to Boise is complete without a stop at Albertsons Stadium. They are in the process of adding more seating, so we couldn’t get any closer.

Mary and I helped each other out by playing percussion when not on the podium. Here is my view from the bass drum!

I love the vibe of summer music camps–who doesn’t want to teach in shorts!–and I’d highly recommend this one. Many thanks to my awesome students!
