This guy. It’s impossible to truly express my appreciation for Gary A. Speck. His service to the music education has been second to none. I was fortunate enough to witness him in action this week, firsthand. I’ll carry many memories of my time at Miami University with me, but the thing that will stick with me the longest is the relationship he has with his students. The love and admiration they have for him is evident, and the feelings are most definitely mutual.
Mr. Speck teaches music, but much more, he teaches about life. When commissioned by alums of the Miami University Wind Ensemble to write a piece for Gary’s final concert at Miami University, I hoped to write him something beautiful. Equally, I wanted to write something that would provoke thought. Fortunately and without knowing it, Gary led me straight to the work’s eventual title and inspiration. The result of this recent collaboration is my newest work for winds, “This is Water.”

It’s musical week! Come out and support Aitkin High School’s production of Bye Bye Birdie, April 4th-7th. You won’t want to miss it! ...
Well, that was fun! I was walking by my phone and happened to see it ringing (it’s almost always on silent). Sure enough, it was Mike Golemo and the ENTIRE ATSSB Symphonic Band on the other end, calling tell me they are playing Temperance tomorrow morning at TMEA! It sounds like it’s going really well, and it’s not a concert to be missed! I’d like to send a huge congratulations from Minnesota to all of the students that made the group; all-state is a huge honor! Mike, thank you for continuing to champion my music!
Here is a recent image I took of the Temperance River. It’s truly one of my favorite places in the world. If you aren’t familiar with this work, I’d love for you to check this 2017 CBDNA Young Band Composition Contest winner (though there isn’t much about this piece that’s “young band” 😂). #TMEA ...
Have I mentioned I really enjoy conducting? This weekend I had the pleasure of conducting the SEIBA High School Honor Band. The students were prepared, flexible and focused. In other words, a joy to collaborate with in every way!
We also had the good fortune of having Joni Greene join us as a guest composer. SEIBA commissioned Joni to write a new work for band, which resulted in AfterGlow. Such beautiful and thoughtful music! It was a blast to collaborate with Joni and the students on this meaningful project. Additionally, we did a consortium premiere of another one of Joni’s works called Shattering Stars. To round out the concert we did two works of mine: A Crown of Beauty (only a few weeks old and just the second performance) and Earthshine (premiered last spring). In other words, a lot of wet ink!
I’m proud to be associated with all of these works, and I encourage you to check them out; they are student and audience approved!
Many thanks to wonderful friends and educators Drew Anderson and Rob Medd for believing in this idea and coordinating all of the moving parts to make it happen! Also, thank you all of my other SEIBA friends; your efforts were greatly appreciated! And last but not least, thank you to the University of Iowa (my alma mater - go Hawks!) for hosting this wonderful event! ...
